athlete resources

At G&S Academy, athletes have access to everything they need to succeed. From exciting camp activities to an enhanced training program; we aim to provide the best summer camp experience for athletes to develop, build confidence and have fun!

View each program/class description for athletes below.

  • Testing is an important part of the G & S Academy experience and is designed to help our instructors understand each athlete’s current tumbling ability. Athletes will be asked to perform their hardest straight tumbling pass, such as a round-off, round-off back handspring, round-off back handspring tuck, or other appropriate skill combination.

Based on the skills demonstrated, athletes will be placed into training groups with others who have similar tumbling abilities. This allows instructors to tailor instruction, drills, and progressions to each group while creating an environment where athletes can train alongside others working toward similar goals.

  • Open Gym gives athletes the opportunity to take ownership of their training and work on the skills they choose, at their own pace. Athletes can use this time to focus on specific tumbling skills, connections, drills, or areas of their routine that they want to improve.

This flexible training environment allows athletes to repeat skills, work through progressions, build confidence, and spend additional time on areas where they need more practice. Athletes are encouraged to come in with goals, make intentional choices about their training, and use the available space and equipment to maximize their time in the gym.

The goal is to help athletes develop independence, confidence, and better training habits while giving them the freedom to take ownership of their skill development.

  • This class is designed to help athletes better understand the college cheer recruiting process and what it takes to prepare for the next level. Athletes will have the opportunity to learn directly from college coaches about recruiting timelines, communication, expectations, team culture, scholarships, tryouts, and what coaches look for in potential athletes.

Through conversations, Q&A sessions, and interactive discussions with college coaches, athletes will learn how to introduce themselves, communicate professionally, create a strong recruiting presence, and prepare for the college cheer experience. Coaches will also share insight into what athletes can do now to become stronger candidates and better prepared for the recruiting process.

The goal is to help athletes understand the college recruiting process, build confidence when communicating with coaches, and take the next steps toward finding a college cheer opportunity that fits their goals.

  • This class teaches athletes how proper nutrition and hydration can directly impact energy, strength, recovery, focus, and overall athletic performance. Athletes will learn the fundamentals of fueling their bodies before, during, and after training and competition.

  • Ever wondered what judges see when they watch a cheer routine? In this interactive class, athletes will take a seat in the “Judges Seat” and learn to watch routines from a different perspective.

Athletes will watch real or example routines and form their own opinions on which team they believe should win. They will learn to identify strengths, mistakes, execution, difficulty, synchronization, performance quality, and other details that can influence how a routine is evaluated.

Through group discussion and guided comparisons, athletes will explain what they saw, what stood out to them, and why they believe one routine performed stronger than another. This class encourages athletes to develop a more educated eye and better understand what happens from the judge’s perspective. The goal is to help athletes become more knowledgeable, observant, and intentional performers by learning to see routines through a judge’s eyes.

PARENT CLASSES

G&S Academy provides parent classes that are free to enroll into while your athlete participates in their camp experience. These sessions are uniquely designed to give you an enhanced education on the sport, helping you better understand scoring, safety, and how to support your athlete's journey.

View each program/class description for parents below.

  • “Talk with Kelly” is designed to give parents an opportunity to step away from the evaluation floor and gain a better understanding of the process their athletes are going through. Rather than watching every skill, comparing athletes, or questioning why an athlete is placed in a particular group, parents will learn how experienced coaches evaluate athletes and, more importantly, how those coaches determine what each athlete needs in order to progress safely and successfully.

The goal is to help parents understand that placement is not a judgment of an athlete's ability or potential. It is a starting point for development.

“Talk with Kelly” will help parents understand not only where their athlete is being placed, but why—and how that placement is part of the bigger picture of their development.

  • This parent-focused class is designed to help families understand how to support tumbling development safely and effectively. Parents will learn how strength, flexibility, body control, mobility, conditioning, recovery, and proper technique all contribute to an athlete’s ability to progress in tumbling.

The class will cover practical strategies parents can use to encourage healthy training habits outside the gym, including appropriate conditioning, stretching, warm-ups, recovery, goal setting, and recognizing when an athlete may need rest. Parents will also learn why proper progressions matter, why athletes should not rush skills, and how to support their athlete without attempting skills or advanced drills without qualified coaching.

The goal is to help parents understand safe training practices, support consistent skill development, and create healthy habits that allow athletes to progress confidently while reducing unnecessary training risks.

  • Ever watch your athlete tumble and wonder what all the different skills, drills, and progressions actually mean? This parent-focused class is designed to give families a better understanding of tumbling and the process athletes go through as they develop their skills.

Parents will learn the fundamentals behind common tumbling skills, including handstands, walkovers, back handsprings, tucks, layouts, twisting, and connections. We will break down terminology, technique, progressions, and the building blocks coaches use to safely develop skills. The class will also explain why athletes may spend significant time working on drills and foundational skills before moving on to more advanced tumbling.

The goal is to help parents better understand the tumbling process, recognize the importance of proper technique and progression, and gain insight into how they can support their athlete's development both inside and outside the gym.

The goal is to help coaches identify opportunities for improvement, maximize scoring potential, and create routines that are both competitive and effective within their division's scoring system.

  • Mental blocks can be one of the most challenging obstacles for both athletes and coaches. This class takes an in-depth look at why mental blocks occur, how fear and anxiety can affect skill performance, and what coaches can do to help athletes work through these challenges. Coaches will explore strategies for recognizing early warning signs, building trust, improving communication, and creating a training environment that promotes confidence rather than pressure. The class will also cover practical approaches for helping athletes rebuild skills gradually, develop positive mental habits, and regain confidence without rushing the process. The goal is to equip coaches with the knowledge and tools to support athletes through mental blocks while helping create a culture that prioritizes patience, safety, and long-term success.

  • Learn how to develop effective stunt progressions that help athletes build strong foundations and advance their skills with confidence. Coaches will explore how to break down skills into manageable steps, identify prerequisite skills, set appropriate goals, and create structured training plans for different levels and abilities.
